VANCOUVER – Press Release

The Power in Sport is pleased to announce the next proclamation made by a government body to recognize 2015 as a significant year for women and sport in Canada.

Declaration “2015 – The Year of Women in Sport!” was declared by The City of Surrey tonight, Monday, Dec 15th, at their Council meeting.

“As the host country for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, our residents and young athletes alike will have a unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere that accompanies international competition at the elite level,” said Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner. “I am pleased to declare 2015 as the year of Women in Sport, and I look forward to Canada successfully showcasing the talent of our female athletes in all sports.”

“Next year is a year worth recognizing given the Women’s World Cup of Soccer here in Canada. It is the single largest elite sporting event for women in the world and, as such, an inspiration for Canadians and supporters of the women’s game around the world. We are pleased to have Surrey join North Vancouver and Burnaby in making this declaration. We hope Canadians and other municipal governments will be inspired to participate” said Linda Diano of The Power in Sport.
