Today we are celebrating the sport of field hockey as the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is well underway. We Q&A’d over the internet with Ali Lee, a former Canadian National Women’s Team member and advocate for the sport.

Ali Lee. Former Canadian National Team member, Field Hockey.

First name:

Ali

What is a past highlight in the history of field hockey, as you know it?

Historically : 1960 – Pakistan ended India’s streak of six straight gold medals and 30 victorious Olympic matches by winning the final in Rome, 1-0.

Key game changer moments were the elimination of off side, the use of water-based astroturf and the introduction of the self-pass.

What is a present highlight?

A present highlight was definitely the 2014 Double World Cup in Holland.

The biggest highlights were for Pan America and the #11 Argentina Men finishing 3rd and, of course, the #10 USA women finishing 3rd.

Also, that was probably the BEST Australian Kookaburras team ever to compete in the history of hockey. Their win was so inevitable but their style and play was superior to any other team unlike anyone ever before – one goal against in all of pool play – unbelievable.

What is your hope for the sport of field hockey?

My hope for the sport is that it would be more accessible globally and the modern game will put the sport in a light that beats out the stereo types that it’s only for girls, it’s super complicated and boring.

(Field) hockey in BC is affordable, inclusive, community-oriented and encourages multi-sport participation. I wish every kid could be introduced to it at a young age.

The biggest reason why the sport is so successful at a lower level is because of how community oriented it is compared to ice hockey, soccer basketball, etc. which ask kids to specialize and commit at such an early age.

Who are you & what should we know about you?

I have played hockey since I was about 10 years old and have played provincially since I was 12 and played for Canada since I was 16. I played for 8 years and then retired.

-I currently work in sport, communications specifically, and spent 4 months working for the International Hockey Federation, mainly in communications for the 2014 Hockey World Cup.

-I also do media operations and communications for the Pan American Hockey Federation and the International Hockey Federation on a per Event basis.

-I am a high performance coach, running all the Under-15 programs in Victoria and the BC programs at times, as well as a nationally certified umpire.

-I run the master coaching (Coaching the coaches) in the Victoria Junior League, for kids aged 4-18.

-I’m very active running the island premier team, a first division women’s league team.

-I sit on the board for Field Hockey Victoria and the Vancouver Island Ladies field hockey association.

-I also compete in the men’s league and help coordinate the University of Victoria Intramurals team!

A hockey nut, nonetheless.

I love to see the sport grow and I try to get anyone and everyone out to learn how to play!

Thank you Ali!
