Today we are celebrating the sport of field hockey as the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is well underway. One of our contributors is Steph Jameson, a former Canadian national team player (2002 – 2012) now playing in Belfast.
What is a past highlight in the history of field hockey, as you know it?
Canada won this game in sudden death strokes, securing a berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. What was even more special is that my brother played in the match and I got to see it live!
What is a present highlight?
There were regularly 15 000 people in the stadium watching, and the event was broadcast on television all around the world. There were so many exciting games and the tournament displayed an exceptionally high level of hockey!
What is your hope for the sport of field hockey?
I would like to see our player base increase as well as the level of exposure received by our wonderful sport.
I am currently living in the UK, where you can regularly see international hockey broadcast on television – I would love for that to become a reality in Canada!
Who are you & what should we know about you?
I also played five years of varsity field hockey for the University of British Columbia, and am currently playing for the Ulster Elks here in Belfast.
