A Thank You // Our Intentions for 2015

To say 2014 was a year of growth in understanding is an understatement!

It is only because of my work with you that I was able to see where to take The Power in Sport.

I started the with several initiatives, to explore what mediums could connect with the right people and in the quickest way.

  • declaring “2015 – The Year of Women in Sport!” — To date over 200 of you have declared, 15 organizations and 9 municipalities. Canada can do better, don’t you think?
  • speaker nights – these gatherings were monthly through May in Vancouver
  • “what sport has given to me” – a visual social media campaign interviewing current and former athletes on video and in pictures
  • elementary school pen pal project – between an elite athlete and children in East Vancouver
  • We are now settled on our mission – To build on the partnership between men and women to increase the visibility of women in sport; and to join the effort between men and women to stamp out the persistent inequalities, violence and discrimination facing girls and women. We do this by raising awareness to reduce violence in our communities especially to girls and women.

Simple, right? Easy to say, harder to do!

What we really need is you – contributions of your ideas and passion is the difference maker in what we do.

In 2015, our focus is committed to two programs

  • ‘Play it Forward’, a campaign to play soccer and raise awareness to end violence especially to girls and women.
  • Where we are going
  • — be a record setter! We want people / groups to get in the game and host 1/2 day events on Sunday, June 28th and contribute to a record for people playing soccer. Be a record setter!
  • — live the Code! To inspire on a personal level by living the Code for the season of June 6 – July 5th, in synch with the Women’s World Cup of Soccer.
  • — play the Season! Get out and play soccer and be a part of the online conversation!
  •

  • ‘2015 – The Year of Women in Sport!’ to raise awareness for women in sport.
  • Where we are going
  • –Calling former and current athletes — to celebrate women in sport by submitting your suggestions. E.g. What and who do you celebrate? What needs to change in order for women in sport to be highly successful?
  • Soon there will be a new website up at http://thepowerinsport.com where you can see these programs more fully and contribute online.

Looking forward, may you take the best out of your experiences of 2014 and boldly go forward in 2015.

    “The future has several names.
For the weak, it is impossible.
For the fainthearted, it is unknown.
For the thoughtful and valiant, it is ideal.”
