Hello everyone,

What a cozy message-filled evening.

For those you who came out last night, you quickly became a connected and tight group at The Cottage Bistro on Main. Such high quality people! We visited, ate together, wrote, and shared perspectives about the power in sport.

Our name tags included words such as vision to fun to connection. We heard comments during the ‘chat and draw’ session such as ‘the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world’, ‘total equality between men and women’, and bringing Title IX to Canada (public funding equality between men and women). When we planned the evening we had little idea that such great thoughts would emerge from this small but high powered group. For those you who came out last night, you quickly became a connected and tight group at The Cottage Bistro on Main.  Such high quality people! We visited, ate together, wrote, and shared perspectives about the power in sport.

A few highlights…

  • Ty Crews, former BC Lion, made his way to our event and shared his story about growing up in an orphanage, getting in to a little trouble, then finding sport and a life in football. He is now dedicated to helping kids and looking for funding opportunities to conduct programs to elevate kids to become good citizens.
  • We heard several empassioned messages about coaching men and women in sport, about our own experiences in sport – all with good takeaways. Several folks including T. Anthony, Simon, Carlos (Caique), Karen, Goje, Mabel, Doug, and Alex felt comfortable enough to step up and share their message for the group, somewhat spontaneously.
  • Former SFU head coach, mastermind of a Track and Field program that went on to win 12 NAIA titles (during the ’80s & 90’s) AND an international- calibre decathlete back in the ’70s, Zenon Smiechowski, came and spoke as well about coaching men and women and his upbringing in Poland and raising his family in Canada. What a firestarter! Little known fact: he won the bronze medal at the ’79 Pan American Games in Puerto Rico.
  • Mabel Fong, a marathoner and half-marathoner, stood in front of the group and declared that she would never give up becoming a better person. Truly, these are the words of a driven person! Little known fact: Mabel has run over 30 marathons and 40 half-marathons and continues to challenge herself having just run a half marathon and full marathon over the course of a weekend.

Thank you all for your passion and enthusiasm.

A special thank you to those who volunteered to contribute before and during the evening including Karen Van Delft, Simon Lau, Daniela Stockfleth-Menis, Jo Fung, and Kristen Yarker (Nov 19 event).

Thank you to our host and donors including Eugene and The Cottage Bistro, Fernando and Natasha at Saloniki Taverna on Commercial, and Uprising Bakery on Venables. A special thanks to previous donors including Sacha at The FlowerBox, Momentum Fitness, Innovative Fitness, and Jerry at 3 Vets.

For those who could not attend our event on Tuesday, we missed you. I am looking forward to keeping in touch and elevating ourselves for the next event, Feb 18th.

You can contribute by building for the next event easily.  We depend on your involvement and effort in including other like-minded people who will benefit from events such as ours. Spread the word. The Feb 18 invite (click here) can be forwarded on to others via email.

Our current initiative is declare “2015 – The Year of Women in Sport.” Continue to pass this on to have people add their name. It takes just 60 seconds online. Here is the link for easy forwarding (click here).

Let’s pack the room and grow the message about the power in sport and our actions to make a difference in Vancouver and beyond.

Have a great month and see you Feb 18th.

~ Linda
