Canada’s Para Soccer Team drawn into tough Group D for 2015 CP World Championships
March 11, 2015
Canada’s Para Soccer Team was drawn into a difficult group for this summer’s 2015 Cerebral Palsy Football World Championships in England as they’re getting set to face the Netherlands, Argentina, and Northern Ireland in Group D of the competition.
The tournament, which runs from Tuesday 16 June until Sunday 28 June, will take place at the English FA’s St. George’s Park. And Canada managed to stay away from the top three teams in the world but they did draw some top opponents in the Dutch and Argentines, who are ranked fourth and sixth in the world, respectively.
“With only 2 teams advancing to top 8 round we need to beat one or two of these teams and also beat Northern Ireland,” said Head Coach Drew Ferguson. “It will be tough but we have played all three teams over the last few years, so we know what we are up against and gives us time to prepare.”
The team qualified for this competition last September with a top-four finish at the 2014 America Cup which was held in Toronto, ON.
Playing out of the ‘D3’ slot, Canada will open on Wednesday 17 June against Northern Ireland before taking on Argentina (19 June) and the Netherlands (21 June).
The top-two teams from each group in the 24-team competition would advance to the knockout rounds, which get underway on Wednesday 24 June.
