This week we acknowledge…
the University of British Columbia (UBC) Track & Field / Cross-Country program led by Head Coach Marek Jedrzejek.
I first met him in the’80’s when he came to UBC to start coaching! I remember him as being present and supportive of the team while Dr. Doug Clement was the Head Coach.
When I met with Coach Marek recently and talked with him he was supportive of the declaration. He instantly said it was a great idea. He then forwarded the online link to his team and alumni email list. Those who signed said this in response to the question “What does the declaration mean to you?”
“It shows the power and achievements of female athletes and it’s a great way to acknowledge that this movement is not just relevant to female athletes but to the world of sports in general.”
“Celebration of women in sport.”
“Sports have an amazing impact on mt life and I am proud that women in sports have come so far.”
The declaration is a recognition of sport and for everyone- men, women, and our youth!
So what’s next?
Marek’s leadership is an example of what’s needed to raise awareness about the declaration.
