CANADIAN SPIRIT IN SPORT AWARD LAUNCHED

Canadian Olympic Foundation to partner for the first award.

VANCOUVER –The Power in Sport announces the formation of the Canadian Spirit in Sport Award to be issued in relationship to various sporting events.

To kick off the award, the Canadian Olympic Foundation will act as a partner for the first award. The $5000 award will be granted to a Canadian athlete, coach or official who has demonstrated the “true Olympic spirit” at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.

“At every Olympic Games there are certain attitudes and acts that touch our collective heart. Acts of selflessness, overcoming personal setback, or supporting other athletes in their time of adversity will all be considered during the process of selecting the recipient. We recognize these acts as the true spirit of sport and call Canadians to bring more of these attitudes into their daily lives,” said Linda Diano, founder of The Power in Sport.

“We have seen the Canadian sport community embody the Olympic spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play time and time again,” said Leanne Nicolle, Executive Director of the Canadian Olympic Foundation. “We believe sport builds leaders and that those who participate in sport inspire us all to reach for our full potential. We are proud to partner with The Power in Sport on this first award.”

Rather than wait until the next Olympic Games, the first Award will be awarded to an athlete, coach or official from the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. “It was at Sochi that we saw unexpected acts of kindness from the Canadian contingent. These acts inspired us to create the award in the first place,” said Linda Diano, co-Founder of The Power in Sport.

The award will be given to nominated athletes, coaches and officials who attended the Games. Nominations and donations can be made by the general public at http://thepowerinsport.com/awards up to September 30th. In the Fall of 2014, a selection committee will be convened comprised of the Canadian Olympic Foundation, The Power in Sport, lead donors and sport leaders. The recipient, an Olympic athlete, coach or official, selected by the committee will be awarded $5000 to be used for training and competition costs.

This award will be made possible by the generous donations of Canadians from coast to coast. Additional funds raised will support that individual’s sport association to encourage the emphasis of these Olympic values for our next generation of athletes.
